French Bulldog size & appearance:
what to expect as they grow

From a palm-sized bundle to a stocky, opinionated little adult β€” here's how a Frenchie's size and looks actually change along the way, stage by stage.

BIRTH 4–8 oz
8–12 WKS 4–8 lb
3–6 MO 10–18 lb
6–12 MO 16–24 lb
ADULT (1YR+) 16–28 lb

What actually changes, and when

Growth isn't just about getting bigger β€” proportions, ears, and coat all shift in a fairly predictable order.

Weeks 0–8 Β· Newborn to weaning

Tiny, soft-eared, and unrecognizable

Ears are floppy and folded, eyes open around 10–14 days, and most of this stage is spent nursing and sleeping. Personality barely shows yet β€” this is pure physical development.

Weeks 8–12 Β· Coming home

Ears start their slow climb upward

This is when most puppies go to their new homes. Ears often begin standing partially, though it's completely normal for one or both to still flop for a while yet.

Months 3–6 Β· The awkward stretch

Ears stand fully β€” proportions still catching up

By around 4 months, most Frenchie ears are fully upright β€” often looking a little too large for the rest of the head, which hasn't quite caught up yet. Teething and growth spurts happen here too.

Months 6–12 Β· Filling out

Chest broadens, muscle tone develops

The signature stocky Frenchie build starts to show clearly β€” a broader chest, thicker neck, and more defined muscle. Facial wrinkles also become more pronounced during this stretch.

12–18 Months Β· Fully grown

Adult size, coat, and character settled

Most Frenchies reach full height by around a year, with final weight and muscle filling in over the following months. Coat color, wrinkle pattern, and personality are all fully on display by now.

Typical adult size

There's real variation between individual dogs, but these ranges cover most healthy adult Frenchies.

How their appearance settles in

Ears

Usually fully upright by 4–5 months, though some pups take until 6 months. Teething can cause temporary flopping even after ears have stood β€” this is normal.

Coat color

Puppy coats can lighten, darken, or develop more visible brindle patterning as they mature β€” the final adult shade often isn't fully set until close to a year old.

Facial wrinkles

Wrinkles deepen and become more defined as the skull finishes developing, generally most pronounced by 8–12 months once the adult head shape is set.

Body proportion

Puppies often look leggier and narrower early on. The signature low, broad Frenchie build fills in gradually as muscle and bone structure catch up through the first year.

Every awkward, ears-too-big, legs-too-long phase is temporary β€” the compact, self-assured little dog underneath is worth the wait.

Growth charts are a guide, not a guarantee β€” every Frenchie settles into himself on his own timeline.
